OUR CURRICULUM

VIDA's curriculum fosters artistic creativity and deep engagement with language and culture. In addition to Spanish language immersion and cultural exploration, we guide our kids in developing life skills and the confidence to use those skills.

The photos you'll find below are mostly candid. Here and there you may see a posed smile or the explosion of laughter. However, more than anything else, you'll find photos that capture curiosity, discovery, effort, enthusiasm at trying something new for the very first time, focus and concentration, pride, and social interaction and connection.

Art History

In addition to artistic techniques, we teach art history. This includes the ancient roots of modern artistic techniques and tools and the development of artistic movements. We guide our young artists in viewing, describing, and analyzing art. We profile particular artists and their bodies of work so that participants understand the history and inspiration behind our studio art projects. Examples include the Nuyorican arts movement, mosaic art, the medium of comics, pop art, graffiti art, silhouette, and stained glass.

Creative Writing

Through individual and collaborative creative writing projects, our budding writers learn the basics of Spanish-language grammar and spelling. They exercise their imaginations in creating characters and developing plots. They learn and practice techniques of grabbing and keeping the attention of their readers and persuasive writing. Most recently, our participants have imagined altering character actions and plot in books we've read. They've written back cover "blurbs" for proposed graphic novels, detailed character sketches, lively dialogue, poetry, and scripts.

Cultural Exploration

VIDA's "Cultural Explorers" Club extends learning beyond the four walls of the classroom. We explore Long Island and New York City through group excursions to museums, parks, restaurants, theaters, and other businesses. Examples include the Center for Architecture, the MET, the Museum of the City of New York, the Nassau County Museum of Art, the Players Theatre, Town Hall, the Queens Theatre, Washington Square Park, and dozens of local restaurants and shops.

Career Exploration

We offer mini glimpses behind the scenes and into the lives of professionals across a wide range of careers. Our kids get to meet business owners. They get to ask artists, musicians, and writers questions about how they got their start and honed their crafts. They compare fields (like architecture and interior design).

Culinary and Pastry Arts

We teach young people how to read and scale recipes, measure and combine ingredients, bake and cook, and present their kitchen creations artistically. Examples of skills include dicing and slicing, grating, grinding, and shredding, juicing, whisking, sautéing, and steaming. Through hands-on cooking experience, our young chefs explore the use of familiar and unfamiliar fruits, grains, vegetables, herbs, and spices. So far, we've explored flavor profiles and techniques from the Americas, Asia, and Europe.

Dance, Movement & Performance Arts

Young people need lots of opportunities to move. We've introduced dance styles ranging from flamenco to waltz. Even the most reticent dancers come to appreciate the cultural richness of dance, gain self-confidence, and become more comfortable dancing independently or with a partner.

Enunciation and Public Speaking

Through tongue-twisters and rhymes, reenforcement of letter sounds, read alouds, and exercises, we work on diction, pronunciation, fluency, and the public speaking skills our kids need to find their Spanish-language voices.

Fashion

Our fashion curriculum ranges from styling the fictional characters we develop for creative writing projects to making original garments and jewelry. From sketching styles to making wearable art, we turn imaginative ideas into design pieces.

Music

Our music curriculum explores rhythm, melody and lyrics. We study the origin, migration, and transformation of instruments and we put music theory to practice through hands on experience making music.

Etiquette

Through hands-on activities students learn that etiquette is more than manners—it’s about showing respect and building confidence in social settings. From greetings and gratitude to cultural customs, we explore how kindness and consideration shape meaningful interaction. Learners come to appreciate the value of courtesy and carry themselves with greater poise in any informal or formal setting.

Games

Game playing promotes language practice, collaboration, competition, strategy development, and turn-taking. Whether we're playing board games, card games, Foosball, Klask, jeopardy, or vocabulary charades, Spanish language practice and connection with peers are front and center in every activity.

Photography

We explore photographic technologies old and new. Through hands on practice, our participants learn about point of view, perspective, composition, and lighting.

Reading Fiction and Nonfiction

Together, we read fairtyales and short stories, novels, graphic novels, and informational texts. We build our Spanish and English-language vocabulary. We discuss content, illustrations, and storytelling devices. We compare texts and we imagine alternate endings and other innovations.

Social Networking, Friendship, and Celebration

Our participants create, discover, and explore together. They chat and play with one another, celebrate holidays, and share meals together. Through these shared experiences, they build relationships to last a lifetime.

Studio Art

We teach artistic techniques through short- and long-term studio art projects ranging from drawing, painting, and collage to sculpture.

Social Emotional Health

We build reflection on intentions, empathy and affirmations into our studio art projects.

Spanish Language

Our curriculum stretches our kids' listening and speaking skills through immersion. We support our students so they feel brave enough to make mistakes. (Mistakes are the best teachers!) We provide the building blocks that bring students from sounding out letters to pronouncing words to building sentences to expressing themselves, sharing their ideas, and communicating with others. Our mini lessons on grammar and etymology strengthen both Spanish and English-language skills and foster curiosity about how world languages are connected.

Tools and Technology

Stay tuned for details on how we're incorporating both hands-on construction tools and digital tools and technologies into our curriculum.
